Why is Cord Blood Education So Important?

Cord blood has been used as a source of stem cells in transplant medicine for over thirty years. It all started in 1988 when Dr. Eliane Gluckman performed the first successful sibling cord blood stem cell transplant, saving the life of a little boy with Fanconi Anemia. This opened the door to cord blood’s potential to help treat other conditions that use stem cells in treatment.

Today, cord blood can be used in the treatment of nearly 80 conditions and over 40,000 cord blood transplants have been performed world-wide. Cord blood use has also expanded beyond transplants into clinical trials for conditions like autism and cerebral palsy.

While it’s clear cord blood’s role in medicine has come a long way, many people, especially expecting parents who may benefit from cord blood, are unaware of what cord blood is, what it can do, and the option to save their baby’s cord blood after their baby is born. That’s why cord blood education and events like the World Cord Blood Day Virtual Conference are so important.

We hope to see you there! And be sure to follow hashtags #WorldCordBloodDay and #WCBD20 on Twitter and Facebook for updates.
