Celiac Disease + Primary Lactose Intolerance Risk
Newborn Digestive Health uses a small sample of cord blood to provide genetic insights into a child’s predisposition for developing both celiac disease and lactose intolerance.
Understanding your child’s genetic risk enables families and physicians to assess the need for potential further testing, increased monitoring, or intervention and appropriate lifestyle changes.
NEWBORN DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Early Insights. Early Action.
Celiac Disease
Primary Lactose Intolerance
Benefits of Newborn Digestive Health
Celiac Disease
Untreated, celiac disease can lead to other serious health conditions and autoimmune diseases. 97% of those with celiac disease go undiagnosed, earlier diagnosis lowers chance for developing other conditions.
Primary Lactose Intolerance
Although the health implications of primary lactose intolerance are considered less significant than celiac disease, lifestyle alterations can improve quality of life and overall digestive health.
Convenient
As part of ViaCord’s cord blood banking process, a sample of cord blood is isolated for the test performed on microarray at ViaCord’s CLIA-certified laboratory.
No Impact On Banking
There is no impact on the quantity or quality of stem cells banked for your family.
What You'll Learn
You'll receive Newborn Digestive Health results along with your stem cell collection results in about 6-8 weeks.
You'll receive a positive (+) or negative (-) result for the presence of the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigens) gene alleles HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. The presence, absence, or a combination of these genes has been shown to be indicative of a predisposition for celiac disease. [REF]
(-) Negative means your child cannot develop celiac disease or pass it on to their children.
(+) Positive finding doesn’t mean your child will develop celiac disease, but your doctor may determine the need for additional monitoring or testing.
Families receive a finding of Low Risk, Average Risk, or Increased Risk for developing lactose intolerance based on variations (polymorphisms) identified in the tested region of the lactase (LCT) gene.
Polymorphisms is a region of the LCT gene, which provides your body instructions for making the enzyme, lactase. Lactase helps digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. These variations have been shown to be indicative of a predisposition for lactose intolerance.4
Disclaimer: Laboratory Developed Test (LDT). This test was developed, and its performance characteristics determined by ViaCord in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements. This test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This test is intended to be used as an adjunct to existing clinical information currently used for the diagnosis of celiac disease and primary lactose intolerance.

People ask...
- How long can cord blood be stored?
To date, there is no evidence that cord blood will ever expire. Recent studies published in Stem Cell Translation Medicine found cryopreserving cord blood stem cells for extended periods doesn't affect their ability to function effectively. The 27-year study and 29-year study add to a growing body of research demonstrating the value of cord blood banking.
- What is celiac disease?
According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to additional serious health problems.
- What is Primary Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance is a reaction in your digestive system to lactose, the sugar in milk. It causes uncomfortable symptoms after you eat dairy products that could include intestinal gas, stomach pain and cramping, and diarrhea. According to the Mayo Clinic, primary lactose intolerance is caused by diminishing lactase production in your small intestine. Genes determine how likely you are to continue to produce lactase, the enzyme that helps you digest lactose.
- How will I receive my child's Newborn Digestive Health results?
Results will be included with your stem cell collection results report which you can expect to receive approximately 6-8 weeks after your newborn's stem cells are processed and stored.
