ViaCord's Research Collaborations

Our scientific expertise is at the core of everything we do.

ViaCord has a long heritage of participating in application development to increase the value of newborn stem cells.

We collaborate with renowned research institutions and medical centers across the country to explore new potential medical uses for cord blood and cord tissue stem cells.

Collaborations

Duke University

ViaCord families who participate in Duke’s ongoing research use their banked cord blood. ViaCord releases the CBU to Duke for infusion

Autism - Phase I Clinical Research Trial

A safety and feasibility study infuses patients diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder with their own cord blood stem cells. 104 Study details here.

Cerebral Palsy - Phase I and II Clinical Research Trials

(Phase I clinical trial) ViaCord provided cord blood units for the study evaluating the safety of a reinfusion of stem cells from the child’s own cord blood to potentially treat cerebral palsy.28 ViaCord families that chose to participate used their banked cord blood.

(Phase II clinical trial) An efficacy study of autologous umbilical cord blood reinfusion in children with cerebral palsy.29 Study details here.

Prentice Women’s Hospital

The study aims to establish the feasibility of collecting cord blood and cord tissue from premature infants for potential medical use. Samples were processed by ViaCord’s Processing Laboratory and are available for future use by participating families under the direction of a physician.

Georgia Regents University

Preclinical work examining the impact of cord blood and cord tissue stem cells in a rat model of neurologic Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury (HII). HII is a result of oxygen deprivation that in newborns can cause death or varying degrees of neurologic compromise.

Brown University – Women and Infants of RI

Preclinical work studying the use of cord blood and cord tissue stem cells in a mouse model of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD). BPD is common in premature infants. The study aims to identify if an autologous infusion of cells may provide benefit to children with BPD.

Miracle Babies

Looked at the differences in newborn stem cell collections in premature infants versus full-term babies and studied how cord blood and cord tissue are collected from premature babies in order to improve the stem cell collection process.34

Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Cord Tissue Stem Cell Safety: Evaluated the safety and pluripotency of cord tissue MSCs in animal models.34

University of Massachusetts

Diabetes Center of Excellence - Investigated the use of cord blood and cord tissue in treating juvenile diabetes.31

UMass - Looked at the combined use of cord blood and cord tissue for quicker engraftment after transplant.32

University of Toronto

Researched the efficacy of human umbilical cord perivascular MSCs to reduce pain in inflamed human knee joints (joint inflammation). 33 M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Investigated a method for treating more adults patients with a single cord blood unit.30
